But a situation often pressed upon one's shoulders. For the past month or so things have sunk below the low point of Aramis' own internal "tolerability index." He was, to put it simply, poor. His income was five times below what government standards described as a "liveable" wage, and he had two children to raise on that income. Adrianna's mother hadn't been around for so long Aramis had often found himself searching his memory for a face to go along with the name, and Schmerz was somewhat hesitant in his duties as father. It had occured to Aramis that he was practically raising these kids on his own, and more than once he'd entertained fantasies of escape, of taking them both and running off somewhere else to start over. No husband, no wife, no one but his children and himself. Many women had taken this path, many times. If they could do it, why not he? His parental instincts were just as strong. He felt that flame inside of him dying out. That spark, that vitality that burned and gave him the sparkle in his eyes, the brilliance of his smile--it was fading way. It was by no means an immediate occurance; rather, it was a gradual change, with the waves eroding at his sand castle walls faster than he could build them up again. And although there were times he felt safe behind his feeble fortress, he never once fooled himself into thinking it'll all fall apart with the incoming tide. Low tide had already come and gone, and the waves were creeping ever closer again. Thus far, he had managed to keep his head above the surf and saved himself from drowning. This time, he wasn't so sure of the outcome. Either he built his walls again and hoped for them to withstand the water until the next low tide, or he stepped away from the danger zone. It made more sense to step away from the danger zone. Safe, out of harm's way. A few court proceedings and he'll have what's necessary to escape. Legally, and unafraid of consequence. Good luck, Aramis. You're going to need it.
