HONOLULU - A school record nine-game win streak came to an end as No. 24 Hawai'i fell to Oregon State, 32-35, in front of a sellout crowd Saturday night at Aloha Stadium. The Warriors gained 504 yards of total offense, but Oregon State (9-4) produced big plays and capitalized on Warrior miscues to steal the victory from 20 departing seniors on the Warrior roster.
Warrior quarterback Colt Brennan threw for 401 yards and two touchdowns, but added an uncharacteristic two interceptions, one which the led to the go-ahead touchdown in the third quarter. The Beaver defense sacked Brennan six times on the night.
Oregon State quarterback Matt Moore threw for 245 yards and three touchdowns, and Yvenson Bernard added 108 yards and one touchdown on 20 carries to lead the Beaver attack.
Hawai'i (10-3) missed two field goals in the first quarter before Oregon State scored on a 21-yard pass from Matt Moore to tight end Joe Newton on the last play of the first quarter.
Hawai'i answered with a 64-yard drive, capped by a 1-yard run by Nate Ilaoa, to tie the score at seven. But Oregon State's Gerard Lawson took the ensuing kickoff 100 yards to put the Beavers back up, 14-7.
The Warriors tied the score at 14 when Brennan ran for a 4-yard touchdown with 6:54 left in the first half. Six plays later, Moore hit Reuben Jackson for a 30-yard touchdown. But Brennan found Davone Bess in the end zone for an 11-yard touchdown to tie the game at 21 at halftime.
Hawai'i took the opening drive to the Oregon State 14-yard line, but Brennan was intercepted by Sabby Piscatelli in the end zone. One play later, Moore hit Sammie Stroughter down the near sideline for a 80-yard score.
Dan Kelly kicked a 26-yard field goal to cut the Beaver lead to four (28-24) heading into the fourth quarter. But Moore orchestrated a 75-yard scoring drive to help the Beavers take a 35-24 lead.
After Brennan threw his second interception of the game, the Warrior defense forced OSU to punt, but a bobbled snap put the Warriors at the Beaver 44-yard line. Eight plays later, Brennan hit Ryan Grice-Mullen for a 4-yard touchdown to cut the lead to five (35-30) after a failed two-point conversion.
The Warrior defense came up big, forcing a three-and-out on the next series, to get the Hawai'i offense the ball back at the OSU 40-yard line with 4:10 on the clock. The Warriors drove down to the OSU 19-yard line and failed n 4th-and-14 to end all hopes of a win. Bess led all receivers with 10 catches for 116 yards and one touchdown. Brennan broke several school records in the game, including: Most Pass Completions (Season): 373 (old record was 358 by Timmy Chang in 2004), Consecutive Games Throwing a Touchdown (Season): 13 (old record was 12 by Colt Brennan in 2005), Consecutive 200-Yard (Passing) Games (Season): 13 (old record was 12 by Colt Brennan in 2005).
As a team, the Warriors also broke two school records, including: Passing Yards (Season): 5,619 (old record was 5,406 in 2002) and Total Offense Yards (Season): 7,149 (old record was 6,939 in 2002).
The Warriors will now prepare to face Arizona State in the Sheraon Hawai'i Bowl. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:05 p.m., Christmas Eve, at Aloha Stadium.
