Do you have the money for a dog?
Economically speaking, many people can't afford a dog. Many get one anyway. Sometimes it doesn't matter because the dog is healthy and otherwise happy, but something happens and they can't afford the vet, can't afford to change food that their dog is allergic to, can't afford the flea medication. In the end only the dog suffers.
Dogs are not cheap. Even if you get a dog for free nothing else about it is. Food, doggy daycare, supplies, training, grooming, flea meds, vet care : they need all of this and more.
