Jarren seemed to be pulling me deeper and deeper into the forest. "Where are you taking me?" I laughed.
"Don't worry, you're going to love it!" A moment later we were standing in front of a curtain of vines, leaves and branches.
"Err... What am I looking at?"
"This," Jarren pulled the curtain back to reveal a cliff scattered with gorgeous wildflowers.
"Jarren this is amazing!" I breathed. I stepped forward letting the breeze flow through my hair and carry away all my burdens. The sky above was alive with color. Crimson, cerulean, lavender and fiery orange streaked the open sky. I strolled up to the cliffside and sat down, dangling my legs over the edge. Jarren came up and sat beside me.
"This is where I come to think..."
"This place is...indescribable," I gawked. "You can see all of Tontral and more!" Down below was a massive expanse of forests, rivers and occasional villages. Overlooking it all were the Falonius Mountains that the sun was setting behind. The very tallest snow-capped mountain, Strasil, hid a magnificent waterfall deep within.
Jarren scooted closer, taking my hand in his. I looked down at our clasped hands then back up to Jarren's eyes. His smiling face had turned the lightest shade of pink. I looked down, somewhat embarrassed. And yet, everything felt right. Jarren turned back towards the view. "Do you see those mountains?" he asked, pointing off into the distance."
"Yeah," I answered.
"That's where I go to train every spring."
"Really?"
"Yup, I've kinda been working on a project up there."
"Oh, what kind of project?"
"Construction," he answered simply.
"Construction?"
"I'm building a house right in the side of a mountain. There was a small hollow just above the tree-line. The river flows near it and there are plenty of fruit-bearing trees up there. When I go there I'm moving boulders, chipping away at the inside and building rafters. I still have a lot of work to do yet before it's finished," he explained.
"Wow, it sounds really nice. What do you plan to do once it's finished?"
"I'll probably live there, away from criminals and crazy kings," he chuckled. "It will be so peaceful out there."
I removed my hand from Jarren's and sat up, staring straight into his eyes. "So... when it's finished, you'll just leave and never come back?" My face must have been showing much more emotion than I had intended for Jarren looked deeply concerned.
"Demetra..."
"You've been my best friend since we were three and now you're just going to up and leave?!"
"Demetra, you know that I could never do that. To never see you again... it would end my world. That's why..." He took both my hands in his.
"Huh?"
"That's why, when the time comes, I want you to come and live with me."
Oh my... "Jarren..." Did he just...? I lunged forward, almost tackling him in my embrace. He seemed a bit shocked then returned the hug. "I would follow you the the ends of the earth," I whispered into his ear. "Of course I'll come live with you!"
We pulled away and sat leaned against eachother's shoulders. The sun had set, letting night take over. The stars were the only things that lit the beautiful night. Jarren took my hand and kissed it. "You have made me the happiest man alive...Demetra."
