A small girl and her mother are walking along the beach when the little girl turns to her and asks, "Mommy, why are there waves in the sea?" Her mother smiles. "Well dear, there are waves because of the moon." "The moon?" "Yes. The moon charms the water in the ocean with its beauty, and because the moon is so beautiful the sea water just can't sit still."
The little girl smiles and notices a small puddle. "What about the puddle? Will it make waves when the moon comes out too?" "No, there isn't enough water. You need lots and lots of water, like the ocean, before you can make any real waves." Thhe little girl stared down at her feet for a moment and then returned her gaze to her mother. "But, why can't a little water make waves too? That doesn't seem very fair."
"The amount of water is the most important part of creating waves." She looked up at the sky and continued to walk. "The same can be said about people. There are many things in this world that can charms people's hearts, just as the moon charms the sea. Things like wealth, vanity, status, image, and power. People who are drawn to these things create waves and the fear in their hearts make the waves gro bigger and stronger. The more people the bigger the waves can become.
And as the number of people grows, the waves too grow bigger and bigger. And that can lead to terrible conflict." The little girl looked back to the sea. "I'm sorry." said her mother. "This may be a little too hard for you to understand." "I guess…" They continued their walk.
"Though I find it a little insulting to compare the water stirred by the beauty of the moon to the ugly waves of human desire…"
