“*ACHOO!*” Kiera’s sneeze woke Saeran up, for a second he had forgotten he was in the chapel. Johan was tending to the fire and Kiera was wrapped up in the blanket Penthra, the priestess, had given her. Saeran’s stomach growled.
“I guess since everyone is awake I might as well get some breakfast.” Johan got up and stepped towards Kiera, “May I have my dagger now please?”
Kiera reached for the handle sticking out from her sash, but she hesitated. “You’re not going to rob or hurt anyone are you?”
“Why not? It’s the easiest and fastest way. Some of the livestock here could last us until we get home.”
“Please…promise me you’re just going to hunt.”
Johan saw the pleading in her eyes and couldn’t say no, “You have my word.”
Against her better judgment, she handed Johan his dagger. He strode past the pews to the doors.
“*ACHOO!* Penthra looked over to Kiera from cleaning the alter, she walked over towards the fireplace. “Believe it or not I’m actually pretty good at preparing medicinal herbs and teas. I might just have something that could help with your cold.”
Kiera looked like she was about to refuse then Saeran spoke up, “She’d love some. Also if there is some way I could help… My leg may not be in top condition but my arms and legs could do just about anything right now.”
“Well I guess there is something you could do.” She grabbed a mortar, pestle and some dark, slightly fuzzy leaves and handed them to Saeran. “Grind those as small as you can get them, I’ll be back in just a few minutes with water to boil.” She left out a side door leaving Kiera and Saeran in front of the fire.
Kiera stared at Saeran with a look somewhere between confusion and appreciation. “Why are you helping me?”
“What do you mean ‘why’?” Saeran began crushing the herbs. “You’re sick and need to get better, having a cold is no fun.”
“Yeah but I was supposed to be your bodyguard and now I’m the one needing protection,” she grumbled.
“Hey hey hey, stop treating yourself like an old rusted cage…” Saeran gazed straight into Kiera’s red eyes. “Why don’t you ever see the beautiful dove inside that I do? Besides, think of it as payback, you helped me, this is the least I could do.”
Kiera stared at him with a smile, “Where do you come up with these comparisons?”
“I don’t know, I guess they just come to me when I look at you,” he blushed.
Kiera looked away out of embarrassment, but it was a good embarrassment. It was quiet for a while, the only sounds were the distant birds singing and the crackling of the fire.
All of the sudden the side doors opened to reveal Penthra struggling to carry a kettle of water, “I’ve got it, don’t worry,” she grunted.
“Here let me help you,” Kiera hurried over letting the blanket fall to the ground.
“Thank you dear, but shouldn’t you be under the blanket trying to get better?”
“I feel so useless just sitting there and quite honestly I feel a little weird having *ACHOO!* having everyone help me,” she smiled. “A good weird,” she caught herself. “Besides, what’s one minute going to do.” Kiera and Penthra lifted the kettle over the fire and onto a hook.
“Well as soon as that comes to a boil it will only be a minute from there until we can add the herbs.” She looked to the mortar, “Wow those are looking great, have you done this before?”
“Yes actually, back at the pal-” he saw Kiera shaking her head vigorously. “Back home my mother taught me, now I’m glad she did.”
“It looks like we’re ready to put the herbs in now so if you’ll just let me see that,” she grabbed the bowl that was in Saeran’s hands and dumped the contents into the kettle of boiling water. “Now I’ll go get a cup and you’ll have some healing tea.” She opened a door behind the alter that must have been a closet and emerged with a small cup. She stepped over to the fire and dipped the cup into the tea then handed it to Kiera. “It’s going to be a bit bland but trust me when I say it works.”
Just as Penthra said that Kiera had taken a sip. “You can say that again. *ACHOO!* but if it works I’ll gladly drink more,” she smiled.
The front doors opened to show Johan with three pieces of meat stuck to sticks. He strode down the aisle, “I wasn’t sure if there would be a pan or not so I did this, he held up the three sticks. He handed one to Kiera and Saeran, “One for you and one for you. And Kiera, I found this in the forest.” He tossed an apple to her.
Kiera‘s face filled with delight, “You got me an apple? Thanks Johan!” Happily, she bit into it. It was so crisp and juicy that Saeran and Johan could hear how tasty it was. It was so tasty in fact that it was gone in just over a minute. All three of them started roasting their hunks of meat over the fire.
Kiera tested then took a bite out of her piece of meat. “So Johan, you’re probably a better judge, how much longer do you think it will take us to get home from here? *ACHOO!*”
“Once you get better probably just a few days.”
“I know you would say that you would have helped anyways, but thank you so much for letting us stay and helping me get better.” Kiera, Saeran and Johan were saying their goodbyes to Penthra outside the church. Penthra smiled, “You’re welcome.”
As the three of them walked off (Saeran hobbling on his crutch), Kiera called back, “I hope we meet again under better circumstances.” Penthra waved and headed back inside.
