Part 2
How long do you think it’s going to take us to get home now that my leg is broken?” Saeran asked. His pain had subsided greatly but he still couldn’t walk on his own.
“I don’t know,” Kiera responded. Her mind seemed to be elsewhere. “Hey Saeran, I think you should keep an eye on that Har guy.”
“Huh? What for?”
“His drinking problem could get him into a lot of trouble.”
“He doesn’t have a drinking problem!” Saeran protested.
Kiera gave him a look that said, “Really?”
“Okay so he is a drunkard. No offense but why do you care? He tried to hit on you when he first saw you, and you almost took off his head because of it.” Saeran chuckled.
Kiera tried to decide whether or not she should tell... “Johan and I used to have a friend, Faydrai, that was always drinking. Don’t get me wrong he was a great guy and funny too, but the drinking was still a problem.”
“Wait wait wait, what do you mean he used to be your friend?" Saeran got a little uneasy.
She sigh, “Faydrai was always drinking, it was his life. It got so bad that all of his money went to alcohol, he couldn’t pay for his house and was soon out on the streets. Even after that he spent all the money he could find on whiskey and ale.” Kiera paused, “one night a guard came up to him and asked him what he was doing out so late. He was so stoned that he couldn’t control himself, he started bad-mouthing the guard.” Kiera’s voice rose, “Faydrai would only be in prison if he would’ve just shut his mouth!” She quieted down now, “Soon after he was underneath the guillotine.”
“But the royal guards can tell when someone is drunk,” Saeran protested.
“Then tell me why Faydrai is dead!” Saeran opened his mouth to say something but he couldn’t form a sentence in his head. There was a long silence as Kiera helped Saeran walk along the river. Finally Kiera said, “Can we take a break for a while? I’m getting a little tired.” Without letting him respond she set him down against the trunk of a magnolia tree in full bloom and sat down next to him.
Kiera watched the river flow past for a long time, almost as if she were in a trance. “Saeran?”
“Hmm, what is it?”
“...Do you hate me?” she looked into Saeran’s eyes with a longing Saeran had never seen before.
“Why in the world would I hate you? You’ve saved my life more than once to say the least.”
“Remember that one time back at the hot springs when I said sometimes me and Johan eat dinner at friends’ houses?”
“Yeah, what about it?”
“I wasn’t exactly telling the truth,” Kiera confessed... “I have no friends.”
Saeran was completely shocked, “You must have one friend.”
“I did have a best friend a long time ago, her name was Achlin and we did everything together. Then one day my fa- …Johan made me kill Achlin and her family because they were rich and we needed the money. He said it would make me a stronger person.” Kiera’s voice was starting to quaver and her lower lip started to tremble.
Saeran put his hand on her shoulder and offered in a low voice, “If you will allow me, I would like to be your friend.”
Kiera simply looked away, “You don’t want to be my friend.”
“Yes I do, you’re smart and caring and very protective and-”
“Johan killed your mother!” Kiera screamed at him trying her best to keep her tears from flowing over.
The brutal honesty petrified Saeran, his hand went from Kiera’s shoulder to his forehead in disbelief. “But Trina sent for-”
"She sent for the bandits and rebels that raided the castle and one of them was Johan! He was the one that murdered your mother!” Kiera was bawling now. “And I was happy for him! Happy that he had killed your beloved mother!” She screamed at him out of grief.
Saeran could tell that Kiera was suffering more than him so he wrapped his arm around her and held her close. Kiera sobbed into Saeran’s chest, breaths coming in short uneven gasps. Both of them sat there in the shade of the tree rocking back and forth for a long time. A slight breeze blew, showering the two of them in pink flower petals.
With her head still against Saeran’s chest, Kiera confessed, “Saeran, I don’t want to be a thief anymore.” She was slightly more calm now.
“What are you going to do when you get back to Lombarton?” he asked.
“I…I don’t know.”
“You’ll find something,” he reassured her.
“Are you sure? I can’t walk outside during the day without other people grabbing their children and valuables.” A squirrel past by in front of them and grabbed a walnut that had fallen off a nearby tree. “I wish I were that squirrel, never needing to kill or steal or be pressured by anyone.”
“Except predators,” Saeran chuckled. “I’d want to be something a little stronger but still graceful, maybe an eagle,” he decided as he brushed Kiera's hair out of her face and placed a brightly colored wildflower in her dark hair.
She looked up at him and smiled, a look of true relief in every feature of her tear-stained face, “Thank you.”
