The Importance of Having an Open Mind: Preface (preview)
So...You wanna know more about me do ya? Well alright..But be warned, those of you who will read this story must have an open mind. First, take a moment to consider something, the term "vampire". Now I know what you must be thinking "Vampires, you've gotta be kidding me! Another twilight fanboy reference?", but that is not even CLOSE to what I'm getting at here. Ours is a different world entirely, a more silent, yet also open existence. First of all and most importantly, forget everything you know about Vampires, because you're about to be introduced to an entirely different view on the subject. The point of this story is not only to entertain the select few who enjoy a good simple piece of short literature, but also to open the minds of those who may be wondering on the matter of vampirism in general. So, get my point now? If you're not willing to have an open mind, then you might as well back down now. If you don't enjoy the concept of a vampire, then this book is not for you, but if you are in fact one of those curious skeptics, enjoy this nice story that I'm writing up and will be writing up more in the near future. So then...For those of you who wish to find out a little more about me..Then enjoy this..
The main plot-line of this story involves a young boy by the name of Christian Black, no older than fifteen, was beginning to undergo some changes in his life. You'll see his character slowly develop and find new things about himself as his life progresses. The setting is at a new boarding school, Capella Academy, since Christian was finally able to go to school with his girlfriend Kara. He's been living a good life up until he meets some very strange friends, and makes some enemies along the way as well. All in all, those who read this are in for quite a ride in the near future.
Look forward to it.
I
It has often been pondered, since the early ages of mankind “are we alone?” A question some scientists even still to this day take into consideration, but only few have ever considered the reality of things. Perhaps humans aren’t the only “people” living on the Earth, perhaps they are indeed “not alone.” To some, we are nothing more than a figment of imagination, human kind really is the only real race of “people” on the Earth, but others, those who truly believe that there may be others living among them, believe that maybe they aren’t alone. This is the story about those people, whom humans have long since thought non-existent, but whom indeed live among us, and humans are in fact, not alone at all.
It was the morning of September the 2nd, in a small neighborhood house, in a messy little room, looking like it had hardly been organized in weeks, or even months. The sun was just beginning to rise and peek through the window of this little room. In the corner there was a small bed, big enough only to fit one person. On top of the bed, lay a messy looking teenager, still sound asleep despite the fact that this would be his first day at his new school. This young man went by the name of Christian Black, and was in many ways, just your average fifteen year old teenager, but in some other ways, not so normal at all. He had medium size black hair, going down only to his neck in straight lines, and stood at about five-foot-nine, around average height for someone around his age. He was slightly pale, having his skin a slightly whiter skin tone than normal. A yelling came from the bottom of the stairs, seeming to get closer and closer to the door of the room with each call. Finally, a tall female figure with long brown hair marched through the door and blared out at the young man who was sound asleep on his bed.
“Wake up! You’re going to be late! You don’t want to miss your first day at your new school do you? Get up! Pack your things, you’ve got to get going!” she pulled the sheets off of his bed and stuffed them in a suitcase and the young man slowly emerged from his bed and got up on his feet.
“Look at yourself, Christian! You look like a mess! You can’t just show up at school looking like that! Get yourself cleaned off and get dressed! You’re going to be late!” she went on, pushing the young man off towards the bathroom with a pile of clothes and shut the door behind him. He hurried through his morning routine and exited the bathroom. He then headed back into his room, packing up what he could into his bags and hurried out the door. After leaving his house, he took one last look at it and then entered the car with his things, knowing that this would be the last he would see of his home for several months. After a long car ride, he finally arrived at the new school, a boarding school by the name of Capella Academy. It was an enormous looking school, much larger than he had expected. It had large buildings forming columns around the campus, and even some tall cathedral style buildings. All in all, the place was much better than he had ever imagined. He exited the car with his things, and the car slowly drove off out of view. He headed towards the campus, and was taken by surprise and embraced from behind while approaching the campus. When he had turned around from the sudden surprise of being embraced from behind, he noticed it was his long time girlfriend, Kara, who had been the whole reason he decided to go to his new school. She had been attending the school for a year already and invited him to join her so that they could spend more time together. He smiled, she let go of him and they embraced each other warmly.
“Glad to see we’re finally both here, now we can finally spend more time together and go to school together,” said Kara happily. “Yeah..I’m finally here with you,” replied Christian with a warm smile still on his face. “You’ll help me find my way around here right? Since you’ve been going here for a while and all, I was kind of hoping you’d help me out,” he trailed off, sounding a bit embarrassed to be asking for help with things like that on his first day.
“Of course! Follow me!” Kara said happily, taking Christian’s hand and practically dragging him off towards the school building. Christian followed closely behind, dragging his things behind him. II When they entered the building, Christian noticed it wasn’t the class building at all, it was the dorm rooms. “What’s this?” Christian pondered “These aren’t the classrooms.” He panicked a bit, thinking he would be late to class for sure now. “These are the dorm rooms silly,” Kara giggled a bit after noticing how nervous Christian looked “You’ve got to drop your things off in your dorm room don’t you? You wouldn’t want to drag that stuff around all day now would you?” She laughed again. “O-oh…Right..” Christian blushed a bit, seeing as how he was being laughed at. He entered his dorm room once he had found it and set his things down. He noticed it had two beds in it, and pondered who else may be staying in it.
“Will you be staying with me..?” He asked curiously. “No,” replied Kara “I’ll be staying in my own dorm room on the top floor. Aren’t I lucky?” she smiled happily. Christian pondered a bit, but was interrupted by Kara. “Alright then, we’ve got to get you to class!” Kara took Christian’s hand once again and began leading him back down the halls and out of the dorm building. When they reached the class building, they entered and wandered through the halls for a bit, maneuvering through various groups of people along the way until they finally came to a classroom door. “Here we are,” said Kara, motioning him towards the door “Your first class of the day. I guess I’ll see you after class then. Bye!” She hugged him one last time and then headed off down the halls. Christian entered the classroom nervously and took his seat. It was apparent throughout his class that he was incredibly tired, he always slouched in his seat and laid his head down on his desk, just barely paying attention to the teacher’s lectures. After what seemed like forever, the end of class arrived. Christian exited the classroom and wandered around the halls for a bit, looking for Kara. After wandering the halls for several minutes, he became concerned that he had become lost. He tried looking around for some form of directions, but found no luck. After a few more moments, he got the strangest feeling he was being followed. He looked around him, but saw nothing, and continued on. The feeling persisted, and he had a constant watch on his back, until finally from what seemed like nowhere he was approached by a tall figure wearing a top hat and a black coat. Christian turned around, somewhat frightened by his appearance, although the figure looked as though he meant no harm at all. He looked up at the mysterious person curiously, and the figure smiled down at him “Hey there! You look a little lost there pal! Need any help?” he smiled and leaned his head sideways a bit. “Uuuuh….Sure I guess..” replied Christian, looking slightly puzzled by the odd person’s seemingly cheerful disposition. “Alright then! Let’s be off! Now if you don’t mind telling me where it is you were hoping to go?” Asked the strange person, guiding Christian down the hallway. “Oh, yeah…Do you know where the next class for the Juniors is beginning? I’m looking for someone..She’s about my height, has long blond hair, and usually wears anywhere from bright to dark clothing,” explained Christian, hoping the strange person could help him out. “Oh! Yes! Of course I can help you! I was just heading there myself! Say, you’re new here aren’t you?” asked the stranger “You sure do look like it, considering how lost you looked and all. Anyways! Off we go!” he took long quick strides down the hallway with Christian following closely behind. When they finally arrived at the classroom door, Christian was happy to find Kara approaching the door as well, he ran to her and embraced her tightly “These hallways are confusing! How in the world did you ever learn your way around here?” said Christian, seeming tired from all the walking through the long hallways. “Oh you get used to it I guess,” replied Kara, who embraced him back, happy to see him as well. Christian turned back and looked at the stranger who had led him to reunite with his girlfriend and almost reluctantly extended his hand towards him “By the way, my names Christian, Christian Black,” said Christian to the stranger. “Evan Millner! Pleased to make your acquaintance Christian.” He gave a seemingly devilish smirk and headed off into the classroom. Christian looked back to Kara, and then the bell rang. “I should be getting to class too. Your next class is straight ahead, third door to your right, you can’t miss it,” said Kara to Christian. “Hey..Sorry it took me so long to find you..I’ll make it up to you later. Lunch should be coming up soon right? We’ll meet up in the cafeteria later then..” said Christian, as he again embraced her and she in return did the same. They separated from each other again and both headed off to their respective classes once again. III
After a long stay in another boring class period, it was finally lunch time. The other students, along with Christian, who tended to keep to his own self most of the time, seeing as he never really liked crowds. He headed quietly towards the Cafeteria, and took his lunch. He couldn’t help but ponder what was with Evan, that strange disposition, and he seemed to have such an eerie sense about him. He sat down at a small table out in the corner of the cafeteria and began eating his lunch, not seeming to care about being so far away from the rest of the group. Finally, Kara entered the cafeteria and noticed Christian sitting at the small table in the corner, smiled, and joined him there.
“You look kind of lonely over here,” remarked Kara as she sat down next to him “I never got why you always have to insist on being away from everyone, and yet you’re so attached to me.” She scooted in closer to Christian and put her arm around him. “I never really got it too well either,” replied Christian “I’ve just been like this a lot lately..I’ve been changing I guess you could say..It confuses even me.” He looked back down at the lunch table. “What do you make of that Evan person..He seems a bit odd don’t you think..?” asked Christian, looking back over to Kara. “Oh, him?” replied Kara “He’s just one of those ‘odd’ people I suppose. He’s in the same grade as me, so I’ve seen him a few times in the past. He does seem rather odd..” her eyes wandered off into space as she went on thinking about it. Suddenly, as Christian was about to say something once again, a figure seemed to be hanging over him from nowhere, it was Evan! Christian turned around, a little spooked once again by his sudden appearance. “Hey there! Mind if I sit here? You guys look a little lonely over here,” said Evan as he promptly set his things down. Christian, feeling awkward to have been talking about Evan behind his back and now seeing as how Evan had appeared out of nowhere, stayed silent. Evan looked curiously at Christian and nudged him a bit.
“Getting used to life here buddy?” Evan said cheerfully to Christian, still seeming to be keeping a close, fascinated eye on him. After a long awkward silence, Christian noticed he had accidentally cut himself, there was a bit of blood dripping down onto the hard flooring and running down his arm slightly. He noticed the cut, not seeming to be bothered, he just took his arm and licked whatever blood he could off of it. Evan stared at the blood that dripped on the floor and his eyes widened. He couldn’t look away from the blood droplets on the floor and immediately lunged down at it and began lapping every bit of it he could up into his mouth. Everyone stared at the odd sudden movement by Evan, Christian seemed a bit less puzzled, but poor Kara stared in shock, completely weirded out by what was going on. Evan stared up at Christian, his eyes slightly reddish after what he had just done. He shook his head to snap himself out of it and looked around him, noticing that everyone had been staring at him for that stunt. Before long, the bell rang again, it was time to head back to class. A few hours later, after every class was over with, the bell rang the final time and school was out for the day. The students began roaming freely around the campus and Christian decided he would head out to look for Kara. While he was walking around the campus, he finally ran into Kara nearby the dorm building. He ran up to her and embraced her tightly. Kara, slightly surprised by the sudden embrace from behind, turned around and in turn embraced Christian as well.
“Hey…Kara, can I talk to you somewhere private for a while? I feel like talking to you for a while..” said Christian, taking Kara’s hand and leading her away from the crowds of people. They walked into a garden area, completely clear of anyone around them, and sat down on a small bench in the center of the garden, surrounded by tall sunflowers, red and white roses, and a variety of other flowers.
“Kara…I feel strange..I’m not so sure of myself right now,” said Christian, looking over at Kara with a concerned and sad look on his face. “Huh..?” replied Kara “I don’t get it..What could possibly be going so wrong in your life? What’s going on?” she turned to him and placed her hand on his cheek. “It’s just…I’ve been thinking lately and well..I feel..’Different’, like, I haven’t been myself lately..I’ve been getting frequent headaches, I’ve been falling asleep in class a lot more lately, and I can’t sleep at nights anymore..And well I’ve just been getting fed up with people lately..I can’t even be as social anymore..I don’t know what’s going on with me..” He looked down in shame. “Oh Christian,” said Kara, stroking her hand across his face “It doesn’t matter to me how ‘different’ you are, so long as I know you’re still you, I don’t care what happens. You’ll always have me to turn to.” She smiled at him. “Well…Alright...Thanks Kara,” said Christian, looking Kara right in the eyes now “Well then…I should get going...I’m going to go rest for a bit ok? I love you..” He moved in closer to Kara and gave her a soft kiss, then got up and headed off back towards the dorm rooms. Kara watched quietly as Christian headed off on his way.
