Kiera was running across the top of Lombarton, but it didn’t quite look the same as before she left. “Where is Saeran? What am I doing? And why am I running across a straw roo-aaugh!” She had fallen through the roof into a family having a late dinner. She lied there staring at the mother and two boys staring back at her. They stared at each other for the longest time.
The youngest of the two boys said, “That’s the lady that killed papa!” he pointed at her.
The mother gasped with her hand over her mouth, “Oh my goodness, it is!” She smashed the top of her glass on the table and pointed it at Kiera. “Get back, you won’t take my children’s lives like you did my husband. Get back you monster!”
“No, no, you don’t understand,” Kiera crawled away, still a little shocked from the fall. “I need money, I still have to live and support myself, killing me would do nothing!” she struggled to find the right words to justify her crime.
“Killing you will get rid of one of the many monsters off the streets.” She looked back, “Children, go on up to bed.” She turned back towards Kiera, “Now to finish you off!” She brought her hand back and…
The king paced back and forth very calmly. “James, William,” he looked at each of them locked behind bars as he spoke. “I know you were planning to kill my son. But I also know that neither of you are resourceful or smart enough to find out where my son is on your own. So I want you to tell me who your leader is.”
“What makes you think it was us?!” James asked.
“Because I heard you talking three days ago in the south corridor and both of you have been avoiding me ever since then!” his voice was rising now.
“Okay, so you know it was us, but what makes you think we are going to tell you anything?” William retorted.
“Being King has something to do with it. You’re lock up and with the snap of my fingers I could have you thrown into the guillotine!”
“You wouldn’t kill us without getting the information you need.” James said slyly.
“Okay, then answer me this: why would you want to work for such a person?”
“Why not? We both hate the prince, she is very smart and far beyond beautiful,” William said.
James punched William’s arm, “You idiot!”
“Ah so your leader is a girl. That narrows it down a bit. All right guards, put them to rest.” King Frederick snapped his fingers and walked away.
Kiera sat up gasping for air. Saeran was already awake making the fire. “Are you okay?” he asked a little uneasily.
“Yeah, I’m fine.” She tucked her feet underneath her and warmed up next to the fire. “What are you doing?”
“I figured we would eat in the morning, since the smoke isn’t as noticeable, right? Well I took some of the food the messenger gave us and used it as bait to get this squirrel.” he held up the dead squirrel by the tail proving he had done it.
“You take the thigh, your used to having more food from all the feasts at the castle.”
“Uh, thank…you,” he wasn’t sure whether to be angry at her for mocking him or grateful that he had gotten more food.
Both Kiera and Saeran cooked and ate their piece of squirrel meat. Just as they put out their fire and started walking they heard shouting from behind them. “There they are!”
“Get’m!”
“Oh no, they’ve found us, Saeran run!
Saeran started running, “Duh, do you think I want to be captured?!”
“I don’t think they’re taking prisoners today!” She yelled back at him. She started thinking, “These guys are in armor, which means they’ll get tired after a while. It also means that I won’t really be able to attack them with my dagger.” As she was thinking that, one of the men was gaining on her. She saw a low branch coming up so she jumped for it. Kiera grasped the branch, flipped over it and kick the guy in the head. He fell to the ground and Kiera kept running.
Meanwhile another guy was getting dangerously close to Saeran. Saeran kept weaving between the trees, slowing down the guy behind him. The trees were starting to thin, but there was a tree a ways up, Saeran headed straight for that tree, making sure the man stayed right behind him. Just when he was about to hit it he grabbed the tree, swung around it and kept running. No sooner and Saeran heard a loud *clank*! “Heh heh, serves him right,” he murmured to himself.
Kiera and Saeran came together again, struggling for air as they continued to sprint. “How ya doin?” Kiera huffed.
“Little tired, but what are we going to do about this guy?” He pointed behind him, the third guy was not fifty yards away.
“I’ve got an idea.”
The third man was now only ten feet behind them. “Having never seen death, you should probably look away,” Kiera said to Saeran, he nodded. Kiera stretched her arm out with the dagger in hand. Saeran grabbed her wrist to support the dagger. “Now!” Kiera shouted and both of them stopped at the same time. At that second the man had sliced his own throat. Saeran looked away while Kiera looked down at him. “He chose the path that got him killed, very poor judgment. She looked up at Saeran. “C’mon, we have to keep moving, I only knocked out the guy that was chasing me”
“Same here, let’s go.”
