"Get your tail down here, Ariya!" The yowls roused Koryo from his sleep. The large warrior hurried to the den's entrance, nearly trampling Shira, as the much younger cat struggled to free herself from her bedding.
Senni and Kaymi had stumbling into camp, supporting Yuzaak between them. The gray tom didn't seem to be very alert, Koryo noticed.
Ariya had already reached them, and was asking Senni something. Kaymi's yowls had woken the entire camp. Koryo could see their eyes glowing pale in the faint light, as they stared from den entrances.
Ariya and Kaymi were helping Yuzaak to the medicine cat's den. Now Koryo could see that the gray warriors side and front leg were dripping blood. As the three cats passed from sight, Merra's voice rang out in the clearing, calling Senni, Nekan, Koryo, Sarma, Azenek and Langen to her den. Koryo hurried up.
"Senni," the leader announced, when they were all gathered. "What happened?
The compact, yet burly she-cat began. "We had just reached the place, when one of the humans, looked at us." It picked up a wierd black and brown stick, and pointed it at us."
A little red flag went up in Koryo's mind. He listened even more intently, as Senni continued.
"Of course, we had no idea what it was. Then there was a loud noise. It was a lot like thunder, but much louder. We scattered, then regrouped, and noticed that Yuzaak was wounded, so we decided to go back. He seemed alright at first, but he got worse, and by the time we got here, he could hardly stand."
Nekan looked up. "The one with the stick," he began. "Did it have dark brown fur, but only on top of its head?"
Senni nodded. "And dark orange fur on its chest, and dark blue on its legs?"
Now Nekan nodded. "That one chased me earlier today. Must have it in for us."
Merra spoke. "Koryo, you've seen more than any of my warriors," and taught me most of my skills.
The fact went unsaid, but Koryo knew what his leader was thinking. Training-kits normally learned from each other, and all the warriors, but sometimes, a warrior would take one in, and train him or her. This training normally went on even after the kit became a warrior. Koryo had trained Merra, Nekan, and most recently, Scaide.
Merra went on, "go to the place, and tell me what you think this structure is. If you see any humans, come straight back."
Koryo nodded, and hurried through the exit, and out of camp.
He hurried through the woods, to the place the others had described. He saw no humans, but he did recognize the structure. Horror filled him, but he showed no sign. He simply bounded back to camp.
"They're building a den," he annouced on re-entering the meeting. "A human den."
"Then these humans, wielding thundersticks, are going to live there. Tomorrow, I'll warn the clowder." Merra said. "But for tonight, we should get some rest. I dismiss you." She padded over to her nest.
As the other cats left, they nearly bumped into Ariya, followed by dull-eyed Kaymi. "Yuzaak is dead," murmered the medicine cat.
