Darkness, darkness everywhere
Just breathe… something has to be here
There can’t just be emptiness
Besides this dry atmosphere
Stop and glance to the left
And now the right… no, nothing…
Okay, slow down your breathing
They might hear your heart beating…
He spins around and then shouts
His words echo through the void
The sense of fear skyrockets
Wait… no sense being paranoid…
It’s only the dark, child.
There’s no way it can hurt you.
Now, the things that may lurk here…
The same might not be so true
Run, now. Escape while you can
You really don’t want to be here
The darkness is alive now
And it feeds on all of your fear
Into the blankness he sprints
The voice is more than he can bare
He closes his eyes and runs
Breathing in the freezing air
Left foot.. Right foot… Left… Right
Drive yourself into the night
The darkness is crushing you
Keep running with all of your might
There’s a twinkle over there
Just keep going and have faith
He stops in mid-stride, panting
That little beacon will be safe
He makes a mad dash to it
Warmth cutting through to his skin
You can’t chance looking away…
It may never be there again…
As he nears it, you can see
That the light is on a door
And the door stands there alone
It, the light and nothing more
Temptation is too much here
This might not be salvation
Stay here in the dark with me
Without your explanation
Though if you go, you go alone
I won’t be there to guide you
The horrors that could be there
Will have you to advance to
He takes a step, and once again
He feels a warm sensation
His eyes look over the door
with greater intoxication
He slowly passes over
With his arm limply extended
You shouldn’t do this… please don’t…
His motion quickly ended
Inches from his desire
But now having to fight it
His fingers clench the door knob
He’ll crack it open just a bit
The door shifts and objects click
It jolts back and then it sticks
And your stomach clenches up
And drops like a ton of bricks
He enters the haunting room
Slowly feeling déjà vu
As he quickly glances back
To the door he just walked through
He stares now into my eyes
The stare I’ve seen millions of times
A chill slowly rides his spine
Paralyzing while it climbs
A shriek breaks through the silence
Moments after he comes to
The door behind me has vanished
There’s nothing more he can do
Raising my arm through the air
I make a demand for silence
He has more to experience
There is no need for violence
I move my arm to the side
And extend a bony finger
While peering into his eyes
Urging him not to linger
He turns, and to his surprise
Before him lies a cracked door
He staggers as his heart skips
How could he not notice it before?
Without a glance back at me
He creeps up to the opening
His mind so eager for answers
That it’s almost fluttering
Now this door open’s slowly
And he glances around the room
That is equally as eerie
as it could also be his tomb
He notices instantly
Two figures, none the wiser
To their acquired eavesdropper
As he continues to lay on her
His heart stops and his stomach tightens
His fists clench and his mouth opens
Spitting painful words at them
Making them turn to contend
The situation worsens
As they become familiar
Along with his surroundings
They look all too similar
He points to the man and screams
This senseless violence goes nowhere
I overlook with disdain
Foreshadowing their despair
So the screaming continues
And as quickly as they started
He points over to his wife
And then mouths the word “Harlot”
The manly figure stands up
And without hesitation
Springs angrily over to him
Ending this “conversation”
He clenches his fist and swings
Connecting with his temple
Pushing the attacker back
He might learn from this example
The figure dashes toward him
And tackles him brutally
And they lay there quietly
As his breaths come sparingly
The figure stands up slowly
It’s hands letting loose of him
And releasing a flood of pain
From his chest to every limb
From him jutting out his side
He spot’s his assailant’s knife
And as his breath comes slower
He feels it draining his life
He looks up at his assailant
At the man that struck him down
Only to see his own wife
With blood on her silk nightgown
As he gasps for air in disbelief
While blood seeps into his lungs
He mumbles to her painfully
As if he were speaking in tongues
He lies there on the ground
As minutes like hours drag by
Minutes without a single sound…
Again, I watch myself die
As his lifeless body rests
The room begins to darken
My vision gives way again
And the pressure starts to soften
There’s black void in front of me
That’s all too familiar now
I slowly open my eyes
And manage sanity somehow
I feel a presence near me
My senses have all compiled
As I softly whisper the words
“It‘s only the dark, child…”

Description:
My longest poem yet, and I consider it one of my best. It's a drastic tone change for me, focusing more on the sanity of humanity and it's handle on loss and death. Still a love:loss poem... technically speaking... Meant to be read over at least twice to catch up on what you missed, because it is really hard to follow (apparently).
