• COMING TO SLEEP
    UC Poika

in quiet moments after I go to bed
the mattress is soft, the fleece blanket sleek
and darkness, gentle on my eyes, gives me a hug
surrounding me with kindnesses I’ve seldom shown
as distant sounds of music then make the pledge
to chase away all demons, so to speak,
with emotional healing which cannot bear a grudge
as one leaf falls off before anew one grows
and I begin the peeling of my lettuce leafed fate
and Destiny unveiled seems naked there inside
the gowns of years as unfaithful peers like Ate’s
have drawn the netting away that now no longer hides
the desires, the lusts, the fires, the need to eat
its center core, the last of Life’s amazing sweets.
