• HUNTER HUNTRESS
    by UC Poika

in the meadow stands an yearling white tailed buck
on his own but without a visible sign of horns
and only the distant promise of those yet to come
but he stands alert to dangers of every sort
for except he knows the reason the blue jay calls
and hears the grouse, the robins and blackbirds fly
then sees the squirrels and rabbits flee the spot
he might not know that the huntress set her sights
not upon raccoons which walk away confused
nor wolves which bolt, nor bears that sideways run,
not even ducks and geese as she crosses the sloughs
not porcupines, chipmunks, voles, nor skunks
and not even this yearling buck that in the clearing stands,
nor even a trophy buck... but him she hunts for is closer at hand
