• YOU TOLD HIM NO
By: JK, Inspired by, "How to save a life" by The Fray
You told him no. He said let go.
You try to keep him, you can’t let him leave.
You feel his pain, it makes you insane
You didn’t sleep, his shadows creep
The look in his eyes, he lies, “We’re friends”
The stories he tells, your trust, he sells
A dark corner, away from the world
He drifts away; you just wanted him to stay

Pressure digs deep, you can’t go back
    He turned over,
A labyrinth of melancholy, he walks
    If only you had…
    If only he hadn’t…
The party, Johnny Paperstep, the tree
The wrong choice to follow, not lead
You told him no. He said let go.

Each step he takes, the farther away,
    The deeper the tunnel,
    The thicker the wall.
Him and you, you and him, separated.
His appearance, trapped in your mind
    Where did you go wrong?
You lost a friend, somewhere along in the bitterness
You would have stayed up with him all night…

Saturday night, invited to the party
You didn’t go, he did. First mistake
You could have stopped him, you didn’t. Second mistake
An hour after the party, you go to see if he’s alright
You drive up to Johnny Paperstep’s house
Lights off, bottles on the porch, tire marks
You follow the marks with your eyes, not too far
    A tree, a car, steam, fire…him…

15 years later, his funeral passed
The mourning continues, you’re braver now
But like him, your heart is dead
No prayer you say goes by without a blessing
    Where did you go wrong?
You lost a friend, somewhere along in the bitterness
And you would have stayed up with him all night
You told him no. He said let go.
