• Description: Yes, my teacher actually did tell us to freewrite, and yes, I actually handed this in. For some reason, she wasn't very amused. But this was a while back, in 7th grade or something. I was digging through my old portfolio, and I rooted this out. Thought I'd put it up, just to see what other people thought about it.

So they tell me to freewrite... okay, I'm freewriting, why don't I have any miraculous insights? To me, freewriting is quite pointless. Okay, what if I choose to freewrite about bananas? Am I supposed to write a ten-page essay on how bananas are awesome?! Nein, mein kinderlach, freewriting is a waste of time and effort. You can write and write and write, and never come up with a good idea. You know how you come up with a good idea? YOU DON'T! It comes to you! There is no way in hell or high heaven that you can just pop up a wonderful essay on command. You have no choice but to sit back and wait. But mabe that IS the point of freewriting. But why should you be writing to have the idea come to you? I've had great ideas while I'm in the car, trying to go to sleep, reading, et cetera, but I've never had a good idea while I'm writing. Usually when I'm writing it's because I had a good idea. Or an okay idea. So here I am, writing and writing and writing, and nothing's coming to me. Complete mind blank. And my teacher's going to murder me. Okay.... thinking, thinking, thinking.... ohmegosh! I just realized something! I can write about the pointlessness of freewriting! Wait... but I came up with the idea WHILE I was freewriting... so doesn't that make freewriting... pointful? Oh dear... I hate knowing what circular reasoning is.

i like it even though i like to freewrite i think its easy and open. i didnt always like it. that is how i used to think about it.
