It was a suicide mission. Everyone knew it. That's the reason why when Annabeth asked everyone around me shifted on his or her feet neverously. We knew what was going through everyone's minds, I can't leave my friends, my loved ones.
So she asked one more time, " Will anyone volunteer for this mission?"
I knew no one would. They all had things to hold onto. Reasons to stay. I had none. I was the invisible camper, one of the many unclaimed stuffed in the Hermes cabin. My only friend had joined the Titains. There was nothing holding me back.
So the words, " I will" escaped from my mouth and I made my way through the crowd. My fellow demigods parted for me, I knew they were all wondering who I was.
I stood in front of Annabeth, " Are you sure?" was all she asked me. I nodded. There was nothing left here. Behind me there were no pleas cries telling me not to do this or not to go. But it was expected, no one knew what to think of me.
I got the instructions from Annabeth. My job was to lead, to clear the way, and divert the attention of the monsters. So that it would be easier for the others to kill them, hopefully less demigod deaths. But I knew it would do little to help the number of deaths.
I looked back one last time, to the faces of everyone. Looks of sorrow filled a lot of them, confusion was partly there to. They shouldn't be sad what was done was done. It's time to move forward.
And so I did. I made my way towards the wall of monsters before us but over my shoulder I heard one small question that broke the silence.
" What's your name?" The question shook me. It was one I had scarcely heard asked of me before.
" Aline, daughter of no one," And with that I walked on. Sword in hand, not knowing if I would ever come back.
There were a lot of shrouds to burn but there was one they burned last on purpose. One that the Hephaestus cabin made, even though the person it was for wasn't in their cabin. In truth she wasn't claimed and her parent didn't come down to help those making the shroud.
Her shroud was transparent. It fit, an invisible shroud for a demigod that no one knew. No one took the time to know. Her name Aline was engraved at the bottom. The only visible part, the only known thing about her.
The fact there ever was an invisible camper shook those who survived the war. The fact that they could have ignored, not seen one camper. It made them think, how many of those who joined the Titan side. How many of those had been invisible campers?
When Percy had come down and all those unclaimed had been claimed, that had solved half of the invisible camper problem. But the other half was their own fault. They could blame no one else. Together the campers, the ones who saw the girl walk off, and the ones who watched her shroud burn. They made a pact; as long as they lived there will never again be another invisible camper.
