He ran his fingers through his raven black hair, clenching James' notebook in his hand. He had unknowingly dropped it moments ago while checking the time on his iPhone. He was unimaginably infatuated with James and he did not know if he liked him, or was even capable of “liking” him the way he wanted him to. He walked quickly to get side by side with James and handed him the notebook.
“Thanks!” James said with the radiant smile that captivated Luke every time he spoke with him, “I would have been doomed in Ms. Beyatch’s class.”
Luke chuckled at the name he had heard so many times before, “Yeah I don’t care much for Ms. Beyar either.”
“But she’s got quite the body on her! She can’t be more than twenty five,” Luke was devastated, he did not let it show but he was crushed in that crowded, hurried hall.
“Heh, heh, yeah...” He laughed half heartedly then took a sudden turn to an alternate route to his next class. Why does every guy I like have to be straight! He thought. His mind was elsewhere and he smashed into David, a very tall guy, very slim but muscular with blonde hair that compliments his icy eyes.
“Watch out!” He cried as all of his books crashed to the floor.
“Damn! I’m sorry dude,” Luke crouched down and began to gather and sort their books. David rested a hand on Luke’s thigh. Surprised he jolted up, amazed and caught his eye. The bell rang as this was happening and they hurried in the door of their class which was only a few feet away.
“Tardy are Luke Ebont and David Hatcher. I will see you at lunch tomorrow,” Said Beyar as they sat down and rushed to get their things in place. Neither of them was bothered or surprised. They were too busy analyzing the encounter in the hall to protest. What in hell was that! Could he be... like me? Could he like me? These thoughts prevented Luke from learning anything about Renaissance art.
They stayed in the class since next period would be their thirty minute lunch, half of which would be spent writing “I will hurry to fine arts survey because it is critical to maintain the culture in my life” as many times as possible to avoid getting a referral. Luke and David caught each other stealing glimpses but were too afraid to stay up so the teacher, who was busy inhaling a salad, will not notice them.
“Your time is up, bring your papers to me.”
They instantly stood and walked to her desk, then retreated into the empty hall. He tried to rush away, he must have thought he made a mistake. A horrible miscalculation that would cause his social life to end. Luke placed his hand on the shoulder of his dark blue hoodie. This halted his retreat. He turned his body slowly and with worried eyes looked down at him. Luke stretched his back and David arched his to make their lips meet. Sparks. Spontaneous sparks are palpable.
They stop and walk side by side to the lunch hall, both feeling extremely awkward. They ate a silent lunch next to each other. Luke grabed his hand firmly before he left and looked him in the eye. Luke received a nod back. Something had started between them. Two people who lacked extended conversation. Who never noticed each other. Something is there between them now. Something they have both craved for their whole lives.
