I hate war; I also hate Hitler’s war intention. It was peaceful until that assassination happened. I don’t even know how Germany got involved with that war! Oh, did I forget to introduce myself? My name is Leo Kliesen. I’m 10 years old and in the 5th grade. My mother’s name is Emma. We live in the suburbs of Germany. My father always goes on expedition. Yeah, yeah, I know what you’re going to say. We had a happy life, blah blah. When I grow up, I’m gonna be just like my dad! Hey! I heard that! I’m NOT cute!
Well, nevertheless, my family is against Hitler’s ideas. But we’re not the only ones who hate his ideas. My neighborhood also hates Hitler. If we ever let a peep that we hate Hitler we would have had a spanking! Life is good… for now. I do go to school, but it’s been boring for me right now. Guess what? My school ALSO hates Hitler!
It was my first day of school. I was not quite happy about it. I was hoping for no school. What? You expect me to LIKE school? “Leo! Breakfast!” said Emma. “OK, coming!” I said. So I went downstairs, ate my breakfast, dressed up
and went to school, blah, blah didn’t really want to bore you with the details.
Every time I go to school, I see destroyed buildings. It’s sorta a good sight to see. I’m not crazy. It’s such a pretty sight to see! It’s also a nice playground, even through people died in there.
As I go to the next block, I see a poor defenseless Jew being torched to death by a German soldier. That’s one reason I hate the German culture, and Hitler’s “final solution”. Seeing that and hearing that makes me sick. I gotten used to sleeping in a bomb shelter during bang-bang moments. Last time, I got hit with a bomb; I landed head-first… in mud. I was unhurt, but something happened that’s a whole lot worse than getting hurt. I’ll put it this way. I RIPPED MY LOWER BODY CLOTHING! It’s horrible. My mother thought it was funny, to me, it’s not.
The strangest thing happen today, the bang-bang moment happens again. My mother looked strange… did something happen? I went to the bomb shelter as usual. The bomb shelter also looked strange. Also it had supplies we use from home... are we… living in here? The bomb shelter expanded recently… is other people staying here too? I was filled with confusion. I went to my mother to ask what’s going on; she told me news that I did not want to hear, ever. “Your father is in… the war.” Those were the words that escaped my mother’s lips. I was filled with despair I told my mother why, but she began crying.
I tried to cheer her up, but she told me to go to bed. I took a sigh. I wished there were windows in this shelter. My friends from school came to the shelter; I was glad to see them but still didn’t change the face that my father is at war. I wanted to cry, but a boy mustn’t cry in these times. “Hey Leo, I heard your father is at war. That’s awesommme!” said Nicole, a friend of mine. “Yeah, I don’t think it’s so awesome.” I said. “Why not?” “Because, what if he gets killed? Gotten captured? Doesn’t it worry you?” “Well, uh, I never thought of it before… how come you know this stuff Leo?” “Look all around you, this world is filled with war, genocide and discrimination.” My other friends overheard us. They asked what were we talking about, but I said nothing. I just lied down and roll over.
Our mother and her friends are downstairs making lunch. I heard talking in the basement. Maybe my mother and her friends are talking about topic such as the war or things I don’t even know. The mothers called out “Lunch!”. We all gathered around and nabbed the snacks. I’ve gotten a grilled-cheese sandwich. The others had gotten turkey sandwiches, original sandwiches, and tuna sandwiches. Just one bite made me realized how sweet life is.
It’s almost noon now. My friends are playing their card games. I’m wondering how long we are going stay here. I heard London took their kids’ outta the fray. A smart decision if you ask me, yet a little risky. I hope my father is okay. My friends invited me to play with them, I agreed to them. It was the only way to get my mind out of the war. I played with them till night. We’ve put our card games away and headed straight to out beds.
I was fast asleep; as I slept I was in warfare. It felt… empty, empty except the smell of lead in the air. I never felt this way before. I was holding a rifle. Alongside me was my dad, my dear ol’ dad. I looked around; everything was so slow in this snow-covered valley. It wasn’t cold, neither the snow crunched when I stepped on it. The bullets just went through me without any pain. I think I was invisible in this world. Is this a dream? “Dad? What’s going on?” I said. He said nothing for a couple of seconds. “Look out!” my father shouted. I rubbed my head in confusion. I just realized why he said that, an atomic bomb was heading this way here. I tried to run; I tripped and fell onto the snow. I tried to get up but my foot was stuck on a twig. I snapped the twig but I was too late. It made its way to the ground; it took everything in it, including me.
I awoke to the sound of a bomb explosion. I looked around, my friends were not here, I felt scared a little, my came to the shelter, “Leo, quickly dress-up and come outside. We have to evacuate.” I wanted to question her, but the sounds answered my question. Man, this war business is getting on my nerves! I did what I had to do, and followed my mother. The bombs gotten too intense for the shelters to take, so we were moving to another state, by plane. I knew this was a bad idea… but we had no other choice. The pilot told us we had enough fuel to go to a state. That was not the thing I was worried about. He also told we’re going to a secret route.
We took off with out notice. My family and friends were on the plane, without my father... We have been flying for 3 hours already. Its 2:00 AM, I’m sick of flying and tired… might as well slee— what was that noise? My friends and my mother were startled, the by the way the plane moved, we’ve be hit by a bomb. It was minor damage, but I don’t think it’ll be the end of it yet… “Everyone stay calm!” my mother suggested. I wished I could. Nicole was shivering in fear. I hugged my mother, I wonder what will happen next… *gasp* we’ve taken another hit. This time… we’re going down. I braced for impact, waiting for the embrace of death… we crashed afterwards...
I awoke in a hospital... someone came to the room, it was my father. My dear ol’ dad! I was so glad to see him. “Hey, sport.” said my father. “Where have you been?” I said. “I was in the war; there was ‘lot of shootin’, bombin’, and explodin’” “Where’s Mom?” “She’s up in the clouds...” I was shocked. “I’m just kidding!” I hate it when my father kid’s around! “It’s a miracle that no one died!” “Where are we, Dad?” “The states.” “The states?” I was shocked to hear that, since we’re German, there’s almost no problem. Why? We can speak English fluently. (well of course, why would you think I wrote this in English?) All we have to do is not say we’re German! Or we get placed in those icky relocation homes. I was uninjured too! My friends said that was the coolest thing ever. My mother slapped my father’s face for doing something so reckless. Well that’s a happy ending for you. Yeah, yeah. A happy family reunion.
THE END

- I think it's okay. It's lacking a bit of "I really was there". Do you know, what I mean? And german culture hasn't only to do with Hitler. That's misunderstood by many people.^^
