• Chapter Two
    or
    Denial in the Produce Section

The next morning when she got up, Emily should have been groggy and tired but instead she’s happy and exited. She skips into the kitchen where her dad is making bacon and eggs. “Smells great!” she says with a smile. Her step brother George is sitting at the table vigorously wiggling one of his front teeth. At that moment her step mom Pearl walks into the room.
“Good morning every one,” she walks over and kisses Emily’s dad on the cheek, “Emily, George, today I am going to town. It will be a small visit to the library, for George, then the town hall, then the grocery store.”
“Ugh!” Emily groans slapping her forehead.
“How bad can it be?” her dad says setting a plate in front of her then George. “And if ya want you can come to work with me!” Emily’s dad works at a bait and tackle shop six days a week while her step mom worked in a office three days a week. Since spring break is starting her and George get two weeks off from school.
    “No!” says Emily loudly.
    “Ye-es!” shouts George.
“No.” says Pearl, “I’m not working today so you’ll come to town with me. And any ways they’re just a few errands.” The only part Emily likes is the town hall. She could see her mom!

After the worlds most boring visit to the library, Pearl had to drop off some papers and things at the town hall. So they begin to make they’re up the large granite steps. She hears footsteps behind her and they don’t sound like Pearl’s high healed click, click, click, or Georges ta-tap, ta-tap, ta-tap. Emily spins around, twisting her hand which was in George’s. She turns around a pries him from her. Then when she looks behind her again there is nothing but a figure whipping back into the shadows.
“Look Emily my toof!” George skipping along and pushing out his tooth with his tongue. They are entering the produce section of the grocery store.
“That’s great George!” she says but really she is still thinking about Gregor. How did he fly into her room? And why did he have silver eyes and strangely colored hair? Well she knew how he flew. With his wings of course. But was it just a dream? Or a fantasy book come true? Emily couldn’t tell. Her, Pearl, and George enter the produce isle. As Pearl is picking out broccoli Emily sees something that she never would have imagined. Over in the corner examining the lettuce is the one and the only, love of her life, Kalvin Cassidy! She begins to smooth down her hair, and in her franticness she sees something even more stunning than Kalvin’s golden curls. She squints her eyes to get a better look, “Gregor!” she says out loud. Hearing his name Gregor looks around as if his is searching for someone he knows. He pays no heed to Emily Warner. “Gregor its me!” she yells walking over too him.
“And who might you be?” he asks as Pearls and George pick out strawberries behind them.
“Emily! It’s me Emily! You flew into my bedroom last night and-” she looks around to see a crowd of people staring at her. “Remember?” she whispers, “You flew into my bedroom last night and me out flying!!”
“Are you crazy? I’ve never seen you in my life!” Gregor says and then hurriedly walks away.
“I wonder what that was about…” Emily thinks aloud. Then she looks around to see people are still staring at her, “Psha!” she says, “you guys think I was being serious?! I’m defanitly going to get the role!” she says, then luckily everyone seems to go back to what they were doing.

Emily sighs as the enter the drive way and get out of the car. She is worried about… Gregor. Why did he deny her? After they ate dinner her, Pearl, George, and her Dad would all play a game. “I don’t really feel like a game tonight,” she sighs, and slumps up the stairs. She looks out her bedroom window longingly as slips on a tank top and shorts. ‘He has to come!’ she thinks. She climbs into bed and takes out a book. After reading for about two hours she is about to give up, when she hears a knock at the window. She gets up runs over, pushes the window open, and backs up waiting for Gregor to enter. He enters as his wings fold back into his body through the holes in his jean jacket. He looks at her solemnly.
“I’m-” he begins but she cuts her off.
“Are you crazy? I’ve never seen you in my life!” she mocks him, “Am I crazy? Am I crazy? I think you’re the wrong person to be asking questions bub!” she backs him up to the window with her finger waggling at his face.
“I- a…” he stammers looking genuinely shocked
“Every one in the store thought I was crazy! Even my… my… crush!” she whispers furiously. He takes a deep breath as if trying not to get angry at her.
“There were too many people around. If I agreed with you every one would think… we were both crazy… or.. or.. that I was really a flying angel.” He inhales again, “That’s what I wanted to talk to you about. There was a man. He saw me. With my wings. Out. In the open. And I thought you could help me.”
“Me help you?” Emily asks sarcastically, “how could the weak and crazy mortal Emily ever help big and powerful Gregor?”
“You’re not weak.” Gregor corrects her, “You have amazing power. In your eyes. I know you have it. The power to change memories.”
