School tends to be pretty typical for me. Math, Science, Language, Lunch History, Sleep, English go home. Fairly boring I'd say. But today, today was different. I met someone. His name is Devon Shock. He claims to be a loner himself as well but he came around pretty quick to me. He's really good at math, he's the type it just comes natural, and well he's good at mostly everything else as well. We're total opposites actually. We talked in lunch the whole time, not even finishing our food, (although I usually don't anyway, Gram always makes Tuna Delight Sandwiches and as much as I tell her I don't like them she insists on continuing to make them for me). It felt strange talking to someone, I mean actually talking to someone. Not just oh do you remember what the homework was? Or, what are you doing this weekend? (asked not to make plans but just to be a snoop, it's a high school thing)
"So do you like any sports?" he said
"No, not really, only soccer I guess",
"Oh, that's cool I like soccor too."
"STOP IT KAYA. STOP FEELING LIKE THAT, YOU JUST MET THIS PERSON," I told myself.
"Are you going to that Teen Night, tonight?"
My heart froze, I tried to contain myself, but I accidentally yelled, "YES! oh, haha yeah, I am, yep, are you?"
I'm so socially aquard I could've died in that moment. I probably just scared him off; Nice.
"Yeah I am. Do you want to come with me?"
Wow. A guy actually asking me to go out somewhere, no, never mind that, even TALKING to me. I could've passed out. I didn't notice I didn't respond yet.
"you don't want to? It's okay I understand"
"NO NO I want to, ha. sure I'd love to I live pretty close, you want to just pick me up or something?"
"Yeah, sure."
We exchanged numbers and then I was about to tell him where I live and then I figured I'd just tell him the house color, that would be enough.
"it's the yellow one with the pink shudders, ha" I tried to laugh off how stupid I felt. Gram, for whatever reason, though it would be a good idea to make the outside of our house look hideous. I humor her and tell her it looks nice.
"oh that one," He laughed, with me though, "Yes I know which one that is. Okay, I'll be by around 6:30, Good?
"Good, yes, great, okay," The bell rang, thank god.
"okay see you then, what did you say your name was?"
Just then I realized I didn't even tell him my name.
"Kaya"
"Okay see you at 6:30 Kaya, bye"
I couldn't stop think the whole rest of the day. A guy, actually asking me to go out somewhere with him. And I'd just met him. And he wasn't even ugly either! Maybe this is one of those sick jokes some kids like to play on girls who aren't popular. If so, that's fine, I'll find my revenge fairly easy. But it didn't feel like that, I can usually tell stuff like that (It's been done enough times to me,) and also, usually the friends are dumb enough to hang around close by so they could laugh stupidly. I didn't notice anyone, but then again that's cause all I could focus on was the fact that some, a guy none the less, was talking to me. Who knows. I tapped my foot until the very last class and and ran out of school when the last bell rang.
That night Gram made Egg Salad for dinner. Yum. I didn't care though, all I could think about was Teen Night. It was weird, but I was ecstatic.
Gram stared at me, "so have you decided whether or not you're gonna go to Teen Night tonight?"
"Yes, I am"
"Oh, good, good. Don't worry Jen, you'll meet someone there. So what time should I drive you there?
"Someone's gonna pick me up"
My Grandmother stopped chewing and looked at me with a slight smile, Really?
"Yes, someone I met in school today, a boy."
"Really? Oh, well that's wonderful. What's his name?
"Devon."
She dropped her fork.
Why do you know his family or something?
"What was the last name, She looked at me with a look I've never seen before.
"Uh, Schock I think he said.
She continued to stare at me and picked up her fork, game a slight smile, and resumed eating.
"What is up with you?"
"Oh, nothing it's just a nice name, that's all, you know when I was back in school, the boys didn't have nice names like that," I figured she was about to go off on some rant about the time period back in her day or something, so I figured it was a good time to start daydreaming. Why had she acted so strangely when she heard what his name was? Could she know him or his family somehow? No, it could'nt be, my grandmother doesn't go out anywhere. Only Bingo night on Tuesdays for a half hour. I don't know, my grandmother tends to act a little strangely sometimes about stuff like that, and the way starting rambling on right away, I figured I should just forget about it. I came back into reality, my grandmother just about to finish up a rant.
"But that was the time period back then, ya know?"
"Yep, it sure did sound different" I gave her a smile and she smiled back. I finished up dinner and decided I should start getting ready; a half hour early, very unlike me. But then again going out with someone wasn't quite like me either.
I went upstairs to my room and shut the door. I opened my closet and looked at all my clothes. It was weird that I actually cared what I looked like so much. I was usually the type to go out in a t-shirt and pajamas, but I figure a better look would do for today. I pulled out a nice yellow shirt and some dark jeans. This will do I guess, I told myself. I glanced at the clock: 6:04. 26 minutes early. I decided to sit at the couch and watch out the window to see when Devon came. Then I realized that would be totally creepy and stalker-like and would probably scare anyone away. So, I decided instead to watch some old black and white movie with Gram on TV Land for a few minutes.
"A classic," She muttered, totally engrossed in the film.
After a few minutes, I couldn't take it anymore, "I'm gonna go wait outside okay Gram?
I figured she wouldn't even answer me but to my suprise she looked straight at me and as I left the door she said with just a hint of sparkling gleam in her eye, "Have fun"
I smiled and left. Grandma Kaye is so odd. We were talking today in Biology about different organisms and how humans are one of the strangest diverse creatures on the planet. I think my teacher was referring directly to my Grandmother. I looked through the window at the clock on the wall, 6:21 and 17 seconds. He should be here soon I told myself. I let my brain wander for a few minutes, and then, out of the corner of my eye I saw something. Someone actually. Someone was walking down the road towards my house, strange since my road isn't usually the type of road people like to walk on. A few seconds later and I saw who it was, Devon. I smiled, thank god he actually showed. But I couldn't help myself from thinking, if he lived close enough to walk, then why hadn't he just told me that earlier when we talked? Whatever, no big deal, I told myself. As he walked towards me, I noticed for the first time what he really looked like. Strong features all around really, and such dark hair, kind of like mine actually. A few seconds more and he had arrived in my driveway.
"Hey", I said.
"Hey, What's up? Are you ready?
"Yep.We began to walk the mile and a half towards The Hill (Which was the place where Teen Night was being held, where Grandma got The Rusty Bar from, I'm not quite sure."
"Did you walk all the way here?"
"Oh no, of course not, my mom dropped me off just a little up there so she could turn around easily I guess."
"I thought about how my driveway and my whole road really, was perfectly easy to turn around in. I turned around and saw only the black of night. I let it slip from my mind, didn't really matter, I just thought it was strange. We walked the half mile, talking casually about school and things of that nature until we finally reached The Hill.
We could hear the music blaring even from outside. We payed our admission (he payed for me) and before I went inside I remembered the last words my Grandma said to me before I left, "Have fun."
