Chapter 11: Awakened
Kauri awoke, her face drenched with water and her water bottle half-empty. She quickly sat up and thought about where she was. She looked around, seeing nothing but trees until she looked towards her left.
There stood Cameron, finishing setting up the tent. There was a fire pit built, the wood ready to be lit on fire. The bag containing her possessions sat next to the tent, sitting upright. She could tell he handled her stuff with care, and she didn’t have to worry about things being either broken or damaged, as if there were many fragile things in there, anyways. The lantern was on the other side of the luggage, waiting to be used.
Cameron finished the tent. “There!” he said to himself. “It’s finally done!” he turned around to realize Kauri had awakened. “How long have you been sitting there watching me?”
Kauri stopped thinking about all the hard work he must have put into the camp and thought about how long she had been sitting there. “About 3 minutes.”
“Ok, just checking, because I looked over there about 5 minutes ago and you were still out cold, so I splashed you with a little more water.”
Kauri blinked for a second, and then began wiping her face off with her hand. “Why didn’t you get help? Normally if people pass out, conscious people call 911.”
“Yea, people who happen to be carrying their phones. Mine’s at home, since I didn’t think I’d need it. I wasn’t exactly expecting you to pass out.”
“You could’ve driven home or taken me to the hospital. That works just as well,” Kauri stated, a little upset nothing had been done to help her when she was unconscious.
“Well, I figured it’s not too unusual for pregnant people to pass out, and it’s not like you hit your head on a rock or something. I checked to make sure nothing had happen to you on your fall. I knew you’d be just fine, and I knew things needed done here. I knew that as soon as you woke up, you’d want to start setting things up, and I couldn’t let you do that,” Cameron explained, putting emphasis on every one of his ‘knew’s. She ‘knew’ he was being serious with everything he said.
“I’m sorry,” she apologized, not taking her eyes off the ground. “I shouldn’t have assumed you didn’t think anything through or do anything on my part.” She looked over at Cameron to see his face in complete shock.
“Kauri, it’s fine. I understand why you would thing I didn’t think of what I did. I would be the same way if I was you.” Cameron sat down next to Kauri as he was saying this. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small pocketknife. “Learn to use it, it’ll be a big help. If you get bored, take up a branch and whittle or something. You might want to make a walking stick or something for when you start getting bigger.” Cameron paused and seemed to be thinking for a little bit. “Actually, how about you do come shopping with me, Carrie, and my mom. I know it’ll make her happy,” Cameron invited, ‘her’ referring to his mom.
“Ok, but only for your mom,” Kauri joked. Cameron stood up, and then picked up Kauri. “What are you doing?” She demanded, yelling at Cameron.
“Taking you to the car. I don’t want to risk you passing out again.” He carried her the entire way, and then put her down outside the door. Kauri opened the door and got into the back seat. “Why are you in the back?” Cameron questioned.
“Well, I know you’ll want to sit next to your girlfriend, so I’m not going to get in the way of that.” Kauri giggled when Cameron’s face showed that he was confused that she actually made sense.
