Kyra sighed. Then feeling one sigh was insufficient to express her utter boredom, she sighed again.
"Oh will you please quit?" her mother asked, feeling annoyed. "I'm trying to watch TV, which i can hardly over your hissing."
"I'm not hissing," kyra said angrily, " I'm sighing. It's what I do when I'm bored."
"Well do something else."
"Like what?"
"Draw, or something."
"Oooo... Something.... Sounds so exciting," she replied sarcastically.
"Ugh.... Go outside. And leave me alone for five minutes!"
Kyra, knowing her mom was officially pissed, thought it would be wise to take off.
It was a nice day outside birds singing, flowers blooming, a pleasant breeze blowing. She went out into the yard, and was no more amused here than she had been inside. She was sitting on her porch, staring into space, thinking about how bored a person could get before their brain melted, when she saw the mouse.
Now you might be thinking, oh she's going to jump up, scream "Eek! A mouse!" and run away. Well, Kyra wasn't skittish, or in the least bit afraid of something a hundred times smaller than her.
So she sat there watching it, and thought there was something... off... about the way it moved around. Indeed, the purpose and confidence with which it moved was quite peculiar.
You are proably wondering just how a mouse could have purpose or confidence, but if you had seen the way it moved in one specific directipon without cheking to be sure it wouldnt be eaten, you would realize that it just did. It was very... unique in that way.
Kyra's feelings about this intensified when she heard it muttering to itself. In English. She only heard snatches of what it was saying though.
"Now lets see, boss said she lived here... Feel bad, but its my job... Doomed for all eternity, but there are worse things, really."
It stopped, seemingly seeing her for the first time. This seemed to through him off for a moment, but he quickly regained his mousy composure.
"Hello, I am from the otherplace. I am curious enough as to inquire, are you Kyra?
Kyra was surprised. More by the fact that it knew her name, than by the fact that it was talking.
"Yes..." she said hesitantly.
"Good. Come with me," the mouse said in authoritve tone.
Kyra laughed. She couldnt help it. Something so small... giving her orders... It was absolutely hailarious.
The mouse, however, looked a bit miffed.
"Listen, I didn't come here to be laughed at! youre coming with me, one way or another!" it said, losing its cool.
"Alright, alright... I was looking for something to do anyway. No need to be grouchy."
"If you had my job, you'd be grouchy too," said the mouse. "Now come with me."
It promptly took off across the lawn and into the forest beyond.
"Hey wait up! yelled Kyra, running after it.
She ran after it until her heart was pounding and her breathing was ragged. She took a look around, and was horrified to realize that she was completely, utterly, lost.
