Where is the ice? you are starving. The ice has to return so you can hunt seals and feed your cubs. You peer back at them, gambolling in the snow. Unaware that if the ice does not return you will all starve. You turn away, you smell the salt spray...and something else...something cold, sharp...The ice! You growl to the cups and start running out to the ocean. You feel the cold air around you. You have waited a long time, scrounging out of garbage. Your paws thud onto the ice, feeling its thickness. It was not thick enough to hunt yet. You bark to the cubs to back up, the girl is the first to obey, the boy follows after testing it with his paw. It plunges through the relatively thin layer of frozen water. You will have to go hungry a little longer...
A FEW DAYS LATER
At last the ice is thick enough to hunt. Any longer and you would have starved, and the cubs following. You wait over a seal's breathing hole, the creature will have to breathe sometime. You sniff the wind, you smell other bears, male bears, but they are a little way off. The will not bother your cubs. The seal pops up, and your thick paw shoots out, clawing it up onto the ice. Blood and flesh flies as you rip into the squirming mass of blubber. At last, it lies still. You Start to feast upon the seals flesh, your cubs join in. At last, a propper meal.
I am putting this on gaia so that people will see why we need to pay attention to our planet. Picture this;
You are a polar bear. The eternal rythem of the ice is changing. Each year, the ice melts a little earlier, and takes a little longer to re-freeze. That might not seem important, but during the time there is no ice, the bears fast, waiting for ice to return so they can hunt seals. How long will it take before the bears cant survive the wait and starve? two years? three? five? ten? I dont know. But we need to do something, and this is why i am writing. Other animals are feeling this change, too! Humans have hunted loads of animals to extinction. Here is a fact: 3/4 of all the animal species ever on this planet are extinct. About 2/6 have been killed off by human interaction. Dont you think it is time we did something?
