My talent lies in imperfections.
What I want is a character that sucks. Give me a geek, a failure, an absolute nobody, and all they need is one little detail, one hint of a glint that I can use. I'll take your loser and throw him through terror, drag him through heck and back. By the time I'm done with him, he'll have had six mental breakdowns and a major psyche reform at the least.
You'll be down on your knees begging for something-- anything-- good to happen to them.
But that's how characters are made. Character is earned, not created, and earned with sweat and blood and misery. Any Mary Sue can walk the walk, talk the talk, and probably blow up a planet with her pinky nail to boot, but when my character does it, you'll be dancing around and blowing up the world with him.
Because you will have been there. You'll have been there through the angst and the smashing of heads against a wall, from the humble beginnings through the growth to final earth-shattering expression of everything he's worked up to be. You'll be on your feet cheering because he's gone from nothing to everything and you were along for the ride.
So give me your rejects. Your trash is my treasure, and by the time I'm through, I'm sure you'll agree.
