• I crept forward on silent feet. The hunter was near and I new that the mother wolf and her pups didn't have much time. I would have to act quickly if I was going to save them. My tan bare feet were silent on the dry leaves of the forest and the moon shined brightly on my blue eyes. My lithe form slipped in between two towering oaks and my raven hair rippled from the slight breeze. The chief of my tribe always told us to protect nature no matter what the consequences. I knew that was the truth and I lived by it jubilantly. Suddenly I heard a loud snap of a twig to my right and my spine went rigid. I could hear the burly man's breathing getting closer, and his shotgun tapping gently against his thigh.

"He's heading straight for her!!" I said to myself "I've gotta distract him!!"

I jumped, hard, on the forest floor caught the man's attention. He raised his gun to me.

"Foolish girl, don't you know little girls shouldn't be out so late? Or playing with savage animals?" He sneered.

The mother wolf growled at both humans, ready to protect her pup. Little did she know the girl was on her side.

Keayn's eye widened in fright. He was only three moons old, and the smallest in the litter, but he dared creep out after his brothers into the moonlit night. He smelled many new smells that he had never smelled before, but his tingled at the rottenness coming from the huge tailless to his right. He saw a glint of silver in the man’s hands; his mother had warned him of those, sharp teeth flew out of the end of it and bit you hard.

Keayn whimpered, his tail held between his legs, "Mother!" he howled. He knew his black pelt would hide him if he crept into the shadows but he was too shocked to try it. Instead he crept forward and felt a course leg smack into him; he had fallen into another hidden tailless!

The mother wolf howled in anger as she saw the danger her son was in. Instantly she sprung up and crept to where Keayn stared in horror .

I looked down to see a little wolf pup gazing up at me with wide yellow eyes filled to the brim with fear.

I whispered "its okay I won't hurt you!"

Keayn's nosed twitched nervously, the tailless in front of him was acting nice, but could she be trusted? His ears cocked to catch the sound of his mothers howl, but he realized he didn’t want to run back to his mother, he felt compelled to stay with the girl.

    "It's okay I won't hurt you!"

Keayn's eyebrows rose, he understood the tailless, he knew what she meant!
Curious, he gave a yip, "Hello!" and waited expectantly to see if she knew what he was saying; he waged his tail to add to the gesture.

Cautiously I stooped down to pet the tiny creature. His inky coat blended so well with the forest it was hard to sort him out, but I managed to pick him up and croon him in the protective crook of my arm.

The Mother looked at her little pup being picked up by this tailless. The Mother wolf looked at her pup like What are you doing? She had to think. The tailless said she wouldn't hurt her pup. But could she be trusted? She had no idea. All she knew was she had to protect her pup. The Mother wolf slowly rose, and stared at the tailless. Of course, the girl would never hurt the pup. But the Mother didn't know that.

Cautiously the mother wolf approached the young girl. The girl froze, became very stiff and Keayn licked her nose. The mother wolf circled the girl and even nudged her slightly but the girl never hurt her pup and she went to lie back down.

The crunching of leaves signaled the hunters approach. He walked calmly on until he was three feet in front of the girl. Mother wolf growled deep in the back of her throat.

The hunter looked at the mother wolf, then back to the girl. "What is it, girlie? Protecting a wolf? You should know better than to play with animals."

The mother wolf growled. She knew she had to get that hunter away from both the girl, and her pup. But how? She looked around, looking for a tool, or something. Finally, her eyes happened upon a big stick. She grabbed the stick in her mouth, then... WHAM! Right into the hunter's legs. He yelled and fell down, face first. The mother wolf smiled to her self, happy that she picked a big stick.

Mother Wolf lay down, curling her warm body around her aroused pups. The girl sank down in exhaustion next to her. By now the hunter had hobbled away in pain cursing that he would return to kill those pups. The pups, not understanding the bigger human as well as the girl, were only made more curious and began to sniff the girl and Keayn.

    "You were so brave, Keayn!"

    "How did you do that?"

All the pups praised him as the girl set him down.

Mother wolf looked deep into the eyes of the girl. The girl understood. The mother knew she and her pups were not safe here but the girl knew a place.

She said, "Come with me and you will be safe."
